While some people talk extensively about meditation, others shy away. There are different opinions, approaches, and ways of meditation.
I first encountered this term when I was 16 when I read "Siddhartha" by Hermann Hesse. I was impressed by Siddhartha's answer to what you know how to do: "I know how to think, I know how to keep silent, and I know how to fast." Then, I realized on some level that these three things are closely related to meditation. The whole meaning has been "revealing" to me all my life.
With the advent of the new age, meditation became "modern." Books began to be published on the subject, films appeared, and more and more people were encouraged to publicly "admit" or brag about meditating. Celebrities from the worlds of art and business went to the East for meditating retreats, contributing to the growth of popularity.
Some of the famous people who use meditation as a tool to improve mental health, creativity, and performance are Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, David Lynch, Richard Gere, Jennifer Aniston, Ray Dalio, Deepak Chopra, J. K. Rowling, and many others.
However, there is still resistance among a large number of people.
Why don't people meditate?
They think that meditation is some "Eastern" or "New Age" fashion detail
They think they are too rational to do that
They think it's a waste of time
They think they don't know how to meditate
Meditation indeed originated in the East, and the "new age" wave embraced it. But the story's beginning and end are also about the East and the New Age.
These two groups accepted and practiced meditation and felt its benefits. However, their experiences and benefits have long been considered subjective. This is why some people think they are too rational to practice it.
Modern science has enabled various experiments and measurements thanks to technology's development.
Today, we know that regular meditation leads to the coherence of the brain and heart. This coherence brings the whole organism into order and directly affects our health and external circumstances.
Various studies were conducted, including blood analysis and brain and heart imaging before and after meditation. The results are astounding. The blood picture changes and the brain and heart work more coherently.
Meditation has been found to lengthen telomeres, boost immunity, and alter gene expression. When you look at those results before and after the meditation, it's really amazing.
At the meditative retreats with Dr. Joe Dispenza, thousands of people have been completely cured of severe illnesses. These are people for whom official medicine has predicted a few more months to live. Within a few days of applying specific meditations, their fourth-degree cancer, psoriasis, leukemia, various autoimmune diseases, and other complex diseases completely disappeared. They began to see, begin to walk, hear, etc.
Incredible testimonies, all supported by the results of medical analyses.
The testimonies of healed people, including many doctors, further add to the credibility of these allegations. In addition, the evidence regarding the analysis and explanation of the distinguished scientists who have conducted research and analysis in the most modern American institutes is unmistakable.
If you think you are too rational to meditate, look for the most rational evidence possible, which results from scientific research.
How does meditation work?
Meditation's primary meaning is getting closer to ourselves and our programs. It involves recognizing programs that are not useful to us so that we can replace them with valuable programs.
The subconscious and unconscious mind make up 95% of our minds.
They store programs that direct our thoughts, emotions, conclusions, decisions, and activities "from the background." In this way, they direct our lives and the circumstances we reach and live in.
Our programs are our definitions and beliefs from which our habits, automatic reactions, and patterns of thinking and behavior have arisen.
The programs we live by are formed through four levels of learning:
Unconscious ignorance is when we don't know that we don't know something. For example, when a child is born, he does not know that he does not know how to walk.
Conscious ignorance is when we know that we don't know something. As the months pass and the baby grows, it becomes aware that it does not know how to walk. He starts crawling and straightens up.
Conscious knowledge is when we know that we know something. After that, with the help of parents, the child slowly takes her first steps, left-right, step by step, and slowly begins to walk on her own. It knows it knows it, but it has to think about how to do it until it practices it well.
Unconscious knowledge is when we don't know that something is known. When walking is well practiced, we no longer think left-right; we walk. We know how to do it and don't think about it. The skill of walking becomes automatic, goes into our subconscious, and becomes a habit. We can learn other skills precisely and in the same order, e.g., riding a bicycle, car, etc.
Everything we know we have learned through these four stages of learning.
Our subconscious is the base of all our lessons, not only those related to learning but also all experiences, conclusions, events, and beliefs.
All these have become programs.
By age 35, we have completed almost all the programs we operate under. These programs make up 95% of our minds. The remaining 5% is our conscious mind.
That 95% makes us live on autopilot.
Our programs carry us through life as written. When we wake up in the morning, we are overcome with a familiar feeling of I, our life's problems, our daily obligations, and what we must do today. We grab the phone and the computer, look at all the issues and wish them good morning, brush our teeth, shower, get dressed, drink coffee, eat breakfast, rush to work, and run around ticking off our to-do list.
We have ready-made patterns of behavior, thinking, reaction, and reasoning for every person, situation, and time of day or year. We live on autopilot.
Over 90% of our thoughts today are the same as yesterday's.
Our life is entirely predictable because the same thoughts cause the same emotions, and those emotions lead to more such thoughts. Based on them, we make conclusions, decisions, and actions. Everything is wonderfully predictable and safe. Everything is the same.
If your lifestyle is ideal by your standards in terms of health, finances, relationships, joy, time, development, and achievement, continue to stick to that model because it delivers the same known results.
However, you must modify the programs if you are unsatisfied with an aspect or would like to improve it.
People try to make a change by changing their behavior.
It's like trying to change a computer program by writing different text in Word.
You cannot change the program that creates that behavior by changing a behavior. The change needs to be made in the program where those programs are located, which is the subconscious and unconscious part of the mind.
So, with 5% of the conscious mind, you must influence 95% of the unconscious.
This is where it gets interesting because the mind is our tool.
When you think about it, you'll notice that you can't apply any tools to that tool. For example, you can't use pliers to unscrew a screw on those pliers; you can hit that hammer with a hammer; you can't drill a hole on that drill with a drill; you can't kick your right foot with your right foot, etc.
This is where meditation comes into play as a mediator.
Our body is the unconscious part of the mind. It is written with programs and executes them. The body's senses enable us to perceive reality (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell).
When you enter your meditation, the first goal is to quiet your senses.
The less external stimuli we have, the more we can dive deeper into ourselves. That's why we sit quietly, close our eyes, ensure silence.
When you sit still in silence with your mantra, your Angel’s name, or concentration on your breath, you slowly disconnect from the outer world and enter the inner one.
As you enter your inner world, the murmuring in your head begins. Thoughts, to-do lists, inner monologues, dialogue, memories, emotions, problems, and thoughts appear.
And this is where many people give up because they think they are not meditating well.
And that's precisely what's good!
The goal is to access your unconscious programs, the thoughts and emotions that work in the background, which you are unaware of because they were long ago stored in the "automatic setting" mode.
Those thoughts that come to you in meditation are your beliefs that direct your life.
It is only essential that you become aware of them. When you become aware of them, "you are separated from them."
At that moment, those thoughts are not your program. You are above them and watching them.
It is important to remember them and bring your attention back to your body, breath, or mantra.
Whenever a thought comes to you, just become aware of it and return to your peace meditation.
When you finish meditating, write those thoughts in your journal. Think about how they direct your life.
Decide to notice them during the day whenever they appear and not allow them to "take root" and rule your life.
Considering that meditation has the power to be a "tool" with which we can recode our programs that direct our life in all aspects, from health, through relationships and finances to personal development and contribution to the world, it is precious to become a part of our everyday life.
Old programs give us familiar results. Suppose you are not satisfied with the results or feel ready for a higher level of achievement and lifestyle in which there is more abundance in health, good relationships, joy, time, and finances. In that case, it is necessary to change programs.
If you feel that you do not have time to meditate, my message is that it would be beneficial to meditate to have a life in which you have time to organize it in a way that suits you. Think about it.
What is the point of meditation?
Meditation is developing closeness with yourself and deep rest on the cell levels. This leads to clarity in our daily lives and, therefore, better decisions.
In addition, we gain access to our subconscious programs and the ability to modify them. Thanks to this, we have the opportunity to recreate all aspects of our lives, from health to circumstances, and to manifest our dreams.
